[Español Abajo] In Nicaragua it is said that women are expected to remain virgins
until they have children.
Although
this is not usually possible – the notable exception being Mary, Mother of God,
who is extremely popular in Nicaragua – that doesn’t keep
society from aspiring to eternal virginity for girls, and hence girls often
hide when they become sexually active.
One
consequence of this is teenage pregnancy. In an effort to hide their sexual
activity, girls don’t seek reliable family planning methods and wind up
pregnant.
Many
methods of birth control – including pills, injections, IUDs and even elective
surgery – are readily available in Nicaragua. But by and large the women who
avail themselves of free family planning already have children. In fact, there
is zero cultural stigma about family planning for mothers of
any age. Young women who do not yet have children, however, seek to avoid
stigma and therefore are reluctant to join programs like ours at the Clinic for
free family planning because they would have to go to the Clinic regularly to
pick up pills or take injections.
This is
one reason that the birth control implant – two small bars that are placed
under the skin of the arm and is 99% effective for three years – is so
wonderful. Except for the bandage around the arm the day the implant is placed,
there is no outward sign that a young woman is using birth control of any kind.
It gives her a confidence unmatched by most other methods for long enough to
allow her time to finish high school, or perhaps even university. It makes her
immune from the pressure to have children (it is not uncommon for men to seek
to “cement” a relationship by having a child, especially if their partner is a
younger woman).
These are
some reasons that the implants are so popular with young women. Unlike other
family planning methods, however, the birth control implants are not available
in Nicaragua’s free public healthcare system. Their availability is limited
even in the private system – and then at a cost to patients of $250 or
more.
At the
Nueva Vida Clinic, we offer the implant free to women under 18 and
to women in our programs including Las Lobas, new mothers and moms with toddlers programs. We offer
them to other women at a cost of $25 which covers the cost of the implant. To
women from outside Ciudad Sandino who have more ability to pay, we offer the
implant at a cost of $50 cover their implant plus the cost of their laboratory
tests and PAP.
In 2021
we have placed 250 implants - including 12 just this week at El Porvenir! Our goal
for 2022 is to place 500 implants, but we need your help.
Due to
limited availability in Nicaragua, we have to buy all of our implants for 2022
in January, which means we need a lump sum to get started. You can sponsor one woman for an implant and exams for $50,
or schedule a recurring donation to help with family planning

Nicaragua se dice que se espera que las mujeres permanezcan vírgenes hasta que
tengan hijos.
Aunque esto no suele ser posible (la notable
excepción de María, Madre de Dios, que es extremadamente
popular en Nicaragua), eso no impide que la sociedad aspire a la virginidad
eterna para las niñas y, por lo tanto, las niñas muchas veces lo ocultan cuando
tengan una vida sexual activa.
Una consecuencia de esto es el embarazo en la
adolescencia. En un esfuerzo por esconder su actividad sexual, las muchachas no
buscan métodos confiables de planificación familiar y terminan embarazadas.
Muchos métodos anticonceptivos, incluidas
píldoras, inyecciones, DIU e incluso cirugía electiva, están disponibles en
Nicaragua. Pero, en general, las mujeres que se benefician de la planificación
familiar gratuita ya tienen hijos. De hecho, no existe ningún estigma cultural
sobre la planificación familiar para las madres
de cualquier edad. Las mujeres jóvenes que aún no tienen hijos, sin embargo,
buscan evitar el estigma y, por lo tanto, son reacias a unirse a programas como
el nuestro en la Clínica de planificación familiar gratuita porque tendrían que

implante anticonceptivo, dos barras pequeñas que se colocan debajo de la piel
del brazo y tienen una efectividad del 99% durante tres años, es tan

el implante, no tiene ninguna señal externa de que una mujer joven esté usando

tener hijos (no es raro que los hombres busquen “concretizar” una relación a
través de tener un hijo, especialmente si su pareja es una mujer más joven).

diferencia de otros métodos de planificación familiar, los implantes

En la Clínica Nueva Vida, ofrecemos el
implante gratis a mujeres menores de 18
años y a mujeres en nuestros
